Posing Guide : 4 Things to Keep in Mind During your Photoshoot

The word “posing” can sound cheesy or bring up some anxiety with some. But having some idea of what you will be doing in front of the camera before it happens will make you become more comfortable on the day of your photoshoot.

The first thing you should do before your shoot is to think about why you are there, and who you are there with. If you’re doing a family photoshoot, take a moment and be grateful for them. Often it can be stressful getting everyone ready and by taking a breather and realizing that you’re there with your loved ones will help you all relax and capture emotion in your images.

For a maternity shoot, think about how your baby will be in your arms soon. For an engagement session, think about how excited you are to have that special person in your life forever. During a boudoir session, think about who you are doing these photos for, and try to act like that camera is your lover.

You want to evoke raw emotion in your photos, so you can remember how you felt at this point in your life.

I will be there to guide you through different poses, but it’s up to you to make how I place you feel comfortable to you. Move around with each other. Kiss each other. Look at each other. Look out at the horizon with a smile you on your face. Acting like this can feel cheesy, but I promise you, movement will transform your photos. If I tell you to walk towards me, feel free to stop and kiss, to hug each other, twirl your love, pick up your kids. Play around with posing and do what feels natural!

Finally, you can have an idea of how to move your body by looking at my Pinterest boards. By looking at images of similar portraits, you can see how people move their bodies & utilize hand, arm, and leg placement to complement their bodies. Eyes are attracted to curves and interesting shapes, so pulling bodies close together can naturally create these curves, as can bending one of your legs can elongate your body. Keep in mind that no two images will ever be the same, but this is a great way to gain some inspiration!

Truly, the most important thing is you enjoy your time during your photoshoot. At the end of the day, you are doing this photoshoot to freeze this special point in your life, and just letting go and having fun will do the trick to create beautiful images. Smile & relax!
